WestJet is recognized as the top low-cost airline of Canada which, for millions of passengers, remains a preferred airline to explore a range of tourist destinations of Canada and other countries located in Europe, Central America, the United States, and the Caribbean. Though it has not joined any major alliance, it continues to increase its number of customers day by day.

History

WestJet was established by Clive Beddoe and his team on June 27, 1994, with a view to providing air travel at cheap rates. Their efforts bore fruit when the airline became successful in making the first flight possible in 1996. Initially limited to Western Canada, the airline added some destinations of eastern Canada to its network in the ensuing years. WestJet continues its expansion to the United States and included Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York in 2004 and Las Vegas in 2005. After November 2013, it extended its services to Europe.

Codeshare/Interline Agreements

WestJet has codeshares with major airlines like Emirates, Delta Air Lines, Japan Airlines, KLM, Qantas, Philippine Airlines, and Air France. Other codeshare partners are Azores Airlines, Aeroméxico, China Eastern Airlines, Cathay Pacific, China Southern Airlines, China Airlines, Hong Kong Airlines, Hainan Airlines, Korean Air, LATAM Perú, LATAM Brasil, XiamenAir, and Virgin Atlantic.

Besides, Westjet signed interline agreements with the following airlines:

Cabins

Business Class

WestJet offers a Business class on 787-9 Dreamliner. Spacious cabins having lie-flat seats with direct access to the aisle, pillows, blankets, privacy screens, spacious cabin, meals, wines, snacks, special meals on-demand, and an amenity kit provide a comfortable experience. WestJet provides Business class passengers with a water bottle at the time of boarding and a pre-take-off drink. For the entertainment purpose, a range of movies, games, music channels, in addition to a touchscreen, TV programmes, headphones, USB port is mentionable features. Other benefits include priority in boarding, check-in, and baggage, as well as 2 free checked baggage allowances, and a lounge facility.

Premium Class

For the passengers of Premium class, WestJet provides exclusive beverages, snacks, hot meals and extends various benefits like 2 checked baggage allowances, priority check-in, and baggage including priority boarding. Economy class on 787 Dreamliner features 3 x 3 x 3 configured seats, blankets, pillows, complimentary drinks, meals, on-demand dietary meals, Wi-fi connectivity, movies, games, TV programmes, music channels, and USB port. Passengers can order food for children before 24 hours of departure.

Baggage

WestJet accepts up to 4 bags onboard whereas passengers traveling on WestJet Encore can travel with up to 3 bags. This is the maximum limit. If the number of bags is over 2, passengers will have to pay some fee.

Passengers traveling to Jamaica or Trinidad &Tobago, are allowed only 2 bags onboard.

WestJet charges $30 to $36 for the first bag and $50 to $59 for the second one. Passengers may have to pay $100 to $118 for the following reasons:

Oversized baggage (Size limit-158-203cm/63-80 inches)

Overweight baggage (Weight limit- 23-45kg/51-100 lb)

Carry-on Baggage Policy

A carry-on bag plus personal item can be taken onboard. Maximum size for a carry-on bag is 21 x 15 x 9 inches/53 x 38 x 23 cm and for a personal item is 16 x 13 x 6 inches/41 x 33 x 15 cm.

Check-in

WestJet offers a check-in facility before 24 hours and up to an hour of the departure for which passengers can access the website or airport kiosks with necessary details and download boarding passes to ensure comfortable boarding.
